You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it there are only alibis.

Employment and Labor Law – Protect Yourself!

Please join us for this presentation on Employment & Labor law.  Melissa Jones will be talking about all different types of issues that affect our industry.  No matter your position, you will hear both sides of the law.  You will learn how the law protects your company as well as how it protects you, the employee.   Sample topics include:

  • What documents are required for hiring?  What if they are not a US Citizen?
  • Are breaks mandatory for specific amount of hours worked?
  • When are employers required to pay overtime?
  • Is there legal documentation required to terminate an employee?
  • Workers Comp - What is required by business owner?  If a contractor's employee is injured on the job, who is liable?
  • Non-compete agreements.  Do they hold up in court?

Melissa Calhoon Jones is Counsel to Tydings & Rosenberg LLP where she practices exclusively in the areas of employment law and business immigration.  Melissa provides advice and guidance to employers on all aspects of the employment relationship, including hiring, discrimination, accommodation of disabilities, family and medical leave, wage payment, labor relations, performance management, termination of employment, and restrictive covenants, among others.  She represents employers before administrative agencies, audits compliance with state and federal employment law, and investigates complaints of workplace misconduct and harassment.  In addition, she helps employers with all parts of the work authorization puzzle, including I-9 compliance and obtaining work authorization for foreign nationals from the Department of Homeland Security.

President's Report

Well, well, well - 2009 is off to a great start already! For the 2nd year in a row we dedicated our first membership meeting of the year (January 12th at the new Hilton) to honoring the history of NACE, recognizing valuable members - past & present - discussing the amazing benefits of NACE membership, and looking toward the bright and exciting future of this outstanding association. The Baltimore Chapter finally went platinum so let's keep this streak going!

We have an amazing year of programming, education, networking opportunities, and member benefits in store for all of you. I look forward to seeing the familiar faces at each monthly meeting, as well as getting to know all new and perspective members this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly - or any of your Baltimore Chapter Board members - with questions, concerns, or suggestions on how we can make 2009 the best year yet for our fabulous members!
Sincerely,
Alicia Karoll

ABOUT THE GARDEN~

Carole Langrall, owner of A Garden of Earthly Delights, and her staff have been designing exclusive events in Maryland for 12 years. Originally influenced by Dutch and Flemish floral design, she chose to name her business after Hieronymus Bosch’s famous triptych- Garden of Earthly Delights. Design and a love of the environment is a constant source of inspiration for Carole.  When you step into A Garden of Earthly Delights’ studio, you will experience flowers in a whole new light. You’ll be immersed into a rich world of design where flowers are art and a love of nature surrounds you. Carole is a green designer—she and her staff recycle daily, compost, and have very little flower waste. Their reputation stems from turning Mother Nature’s bounty into living works of art that reflect your personality and passion.

“Our goal is to create original floral designs which incorporate all aspects of the garden. When we import flowers, we use the highest quality and limit the amount if we can get them locally. We prefer going to our area wholesalers and organic farmers; thus helping to lower carbon emissions. The majority of greens, foliages (including some seasonal blossoms) come directly from our own garden.”

We hope you’ll become inspired too. Welcome to the Garden!

Calling all Teddy Bears!

This month, the Baltimore Chapter of NACE is collecting Teddy Bears for the Maryland State Police.  The Maryland State Police give these bears to children found in traumatic situations, such as automobile accidents or abuse situations.  A hug from a fuzzy teddy bear can help comfort a scared child.  Please bring a new huggable, lovable bear to the next meeting at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center.
