Planning accessible events might at first glance seem overwhelming.

Most everyone is likely to experience a disability, whether due to aging, a chronic disease, illness, or an injury.  Every reasonable effort must be made to ensure that no person with any type of disability is prevented or discouraged from fully and equally participating in an event based on any accessibility issue.

Note that some individuals may not disclose their disability-related needs, so planners should be proactive in addressing potential barriers to participation.

It is helpful to have a general understanding of the various types of disabilities, including mobility, sensory, cognitive, learning, and psychiatric.   Planners must work with those in attendance to identify and provide appropriate accommodations.

Some accommodations may be unreasonable, as they pose an undue hardship or change the fundamental nature of the service being provided.

However, most barriers to participation can be removed without incurring great expense, imposing an administrative burden, compromising the nature of the activity, or raising health and safety concerns.

Rachel Hoffberger of Plan It Perfect

 Rachel Hoffberger, formerly an accomplished construction manager in the Baltimore area, joined Plan It Perfect in 2008. Her project management expertise and creative drive are what made Event Management the Perfect profession for Rachel. Since her days as a construction manager, Rachel worked as an event coordinator and catering sales associate at some in-house catered venues before landing at Plan It Perfect. What led Rachel to her career in events were her educational background in art and architectural design and her innate creativity with her meticulous quality control to provide her clients with a worry-free event that they can enjoy.

 Rachel has been a member of NACE ever since she dove head-first into this industry, and has served on the board in 4 different leadership roles. Rachel has been recognized by NACE National for 3 awards, and was one of Special Events magazine's top 25 Young Event Professionals to Watch.

 Tiffanie McCoy of Bird of Paradise Events

 Given the name, Tiffanie “EventPlanner” by an industry friend in 2009, that’s now who she's known as throughout the wedding industry.  Tiffanie is the wedding planner that strives in making the "planning process" seamless and fun with brides and clients.  She is also the wedding planner that strives on building relationships with wedding professionals to create the most amazing day- with teamwork!  

Bird of Paradise Events was launched in 2008 and named after one of Tiffanie's favorite flowers, it symbolizes Joyfulness and Magnificence!  Tiffanie "EventPlanner" has built a very substantial wedding network in the DMV area and has been published in local magazines, TheKnot.com, TheKnot magazine and has been awarded 2016, 2017 BEST OF WEDDINGS via TheKnot.   Tiffanie is also a speaker, mentor and coach.  

 Heidi Hiller of Innovative Party Planners

Heidi Hiller, Owner and Creative Director of Innovative Party Planners. IPP, and her team of event designers, oversee the production of their events as well as fabricate custom party décor in their studio in Owings Mills, Maryland. Heidi Hiller enjoys working closely with each client to create a unique event experience, tailoring the details and decor to the goal, theme, personality, budget and vision of her clients.  With over 40 years of experience in fields across the creative spectrum including graphic design, event design, sign design, marketing, advertising, fundraising and event logistics, Heidi has built a reputation for creativity and excellence in the Baltimore/DC area.  Heidi lends her creative talent to several annual charitable and community events including the annual John W. Brick Foundation 5K, annual Taste of Pikesville, annual JCC Rock the Block and the annual Family Tree Great Chefs Dinner.  Heidi began private art lessons at the age of seven and continued studying art through college, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis with a concentration in Graphic Design and Advertising.  Her professional career unfolded in the field of advertising, graphic design and eventually environmental graphic design; experiences that have shaped her event design career.
